About the Artwork +
Dolon Kundu's terracotta plate unveils a captivating portrayal of Maa Kali, the fierce yet compassionate Hindu goddess. With meticulous detail, Kundu captures the essence of Kali's divine presence. The goddess stands tall, adorned in traditional attire, her multiple arms extending outward in a dance of power and grace. Each intricate feature, from her intense gaze to the weapons she wields, exudes strength and protection. Kali's depiction is both awe-inspiring and reverent, invoking a sense of both fear and reverence in the observer. Kundu's mastery of terracotta breathes life into this sacred representation, honoring the eternal spirit of Maa Kali.
Terra-cotta, deriving from the Italian for "Baked-earth," is a form of ceramic pottery crafted from a coarse, porous clay rich in iron oxides. This malleable clay lends itself readily to sculpting various forms. Once shaped, it undergoes firing in a kiln or pit, typically reaching temperatures around 1,000 °C (1,830 °F), though historical instances may see lower temperatures around 600 °C (1,112 °F). Following firing, a glaze is applied, imparting the distinctive red hue, though the raw clay may range in color from brown to maroon, green, or red. Artisans often gather clay from dried ponds, capitalizing on its natural availability and versatility.
