About the Artwork +
This exquisite Odisha Pattachitra painting by Apaindra Swain portrays a rich tapestry of episodes from the life of Krishna, featuring a central composition with Krishna and Radha, surrounded by various scenes from Krishna’s life. At the heart of the painting, Krishna is depicted playing the flute, while Radha stands gracefully beside him on a lotus pedestal under a tree. Surrounding Krishna and Radha are arches containing celestial beings, enhancing the divine ambiance of the central composition.
The side panels depict various episodes from Krishna’s life in square brackets. Each episode is meticulously detailed, illustrating significant events such as his childhood miracles, playful antics, and heroic deeds. The story begins from top left, where we can see Vasudeva crossing the river Yamuna, while Shesh Naga protects baby Krishna from the torrential rains, it is followed by exploits of Krishna as a child, playing flute, picking mount govardhan on his little finger, Kaliya naag episode to name a few. The painting predominantly uses a monochrome palette, with the central square featuring a bold red background. This contrast highlights the importance of the central figures and adds depth to the composition. This artwork serves as a beautiful homage to the divine love, heroic deeds, and playful spirit of Lord Krishna, celebrated within the rich cultural tapestry of Odisha’s Pattachitra art form.
