About the Artwork +
In Manoj Tekam's traditional Gond painting, the scene unfolds with serene simplicity as oranges hang from the trees, tempting a curious deer to reach out and pluck them. Rendered in black and white, the painting captures the essence of nature's bounty and the harmonious relationship between animals and their environment. The significance of nature in Gond artform is deeply rooted in the spiritual connection between humans and the natural world, where every element symbolizes the interconnectedness of life. Here, the oranges represent abundance and sustenance, while the presence of the deer reflects the gentle balance and harmony that exists within the ecosystem.
Tekam's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate patterns adorning the oranges and the delicate features of the deer, showcasing his skill and reverence for the Gond art tradition. This portrayal offers a unique perspective on the interconnectedness of all living beings, highlighting the symbiotic relationship between humans, animals, and nature. Gond art originated as a form of storytelling and ritualistic expression among the Gondi tribe of central India, with artists using natural materials like charcoal and plant-based pigments to create intricate designs on various surfaces. Passed down through generations, Gond art continues to thrive as artists like Manoj Tekam infuse new perspectives and interpretations while staying true to its cultural roots. Through his work, Tekam celebrates the beauty of nature and the timeless wisdom embedded in indigenous traditions, ensuring that the legacy of Gond art perseveres for future generations to cherish.
