About the Artwork +
In the traditional art form of Mata ni Pachedi by Dilip Chitra, the central figure of the Mother Goddess commands attention with her formidable presence. Surrounded by a rich tapestry of mythological characters, flora, fauna, and human figures, she embodies various narratives and symbolism. The predominant hues of red and blue signify auspiciousness, while black wards off malevolent forces, enhancing spiritual energy. Within her depiction, the Mother Goddess manifests fury and serenity, embodying a hundred forms each laden with symbolic attributes. Like the revered Tree of Life, she sustains and nurtures existence, weaving together the fabric of divine and earthly realms in a harmonious symphony.
Mata ni Pachedi is a traditional art form originating from Gujarat, India. Literally translating to "behind the mother goddess," it involves intricate hand-painted cloth depictions of Hindu goddesses, particularly Mataji, or the mother goddess. These paintings are often created on large pieces of cloth, using natural dyes and pigments. Historically, Mata ni Pachedi served as portable shrines for nomadic communities, allowing them to carry their deities with them. Today, it has evolved into a revered form of art, blending religious devotion with aesthetic expression. The paintings typically feature vibrant colors, detailed motifs, and scenes from Hindu mythology, making them culturally significant artworks.
