About the Artwork +

This beautiful pichwai painting by Naveen Soni is a vibrant and intricate piece of traditional Indian art, known for its detailed and colorful depiction of Hindu deities, particularly Lord Krishna. The central figure of the painting is Shrinathji, a form of Lord Krishna, depicted in a traditional pose and richly adorned with elaborate jewelry and garments, exuding a serene and majestic presence. Against a backdrop of deep blue and orange hues adorned with white floral motifs, Shrinathji stands surrounded by four attendants engaged in acts of worship and service, holding traditional items such as fans and lamps. Below Shrinathji, a detailed depiction of a yajna (sacred fire ritual) is shown, signifying the worship and rituals performed for the deity.

The border of the painting is richly decorated with smaller depictions of various forms of Krishna in different postures and activities, adding depth and narrative richness. The bottom section features a line of cows and gopis (milkmaids), integral to the stories of Krishna, with cows adorned in decorations and gopis in traditional attire, dancing and engaging in devotional activities. Lotus flowers at the bottommost part symbolize purity and beauty, enhancing the divine ambiance. The painting uses a rich and vibrant color palette with dominant reds, blues, and golds, which are visually striking and symbolically significant in Hindu tradition. Intricate detailing in every element, from the deity's adornments to the patterns on the border, showcases the artist's skill and dedication.

The fine and precise brushwork creates detailed and delicate patterns, while the balanced composition commands attention to Shrinathji, with surrounding elements complementing the narrative. Incorporating traditional motifs and elements such as lotus flowers, peacock feathers, and gold leaf embellishments, this painting maintains the authenticity of pichwai art. Naveen Soni's pichwai painting is not only a representation of divine art but also a testament to the rich cultural heritage and artistic traditions of India, reflecting devotion and artistry through its intricate details, vibrant colors, and symbolic elements.

Pichwai Art

Pichwai art (also known as pichhavai, pichhvai, pechhavai etc) is a traditional form of painting that originated in Nathdwara, Rajasthan. These paintings are typically used as decorative backdrops in Hindu temples, particularly those dedicated to Lord Shrinathji or Krishna. Pichwai literally means ‘that which hangs from the back’ and comes from the Sanskrit words ‘Pich – back and Wais- hanging. Other than its artistic appeal, it is created with the intention to narrate the tales of Krishna to its devotees. History and Tradition The origins of Pichwai art date back to the late 17th century when the Nathdwara temple was established in Rajasthan. These were traditionally commissioned by the temple priests for religious worship and ceremonies and often narrate the stories of Krishna's life, like his childhood Leela, the Raas Leela, Govardhan Leela, and other significant events. Other subjects depicted are the changing seasons, with detailed representations of flora, fauna, and traditional Rajasthani architecture. Techniques  Pichwai paintings are known for their detailed work and vivid use of colors. Traditionally, the paintings are created on cloth or canvas using natural dyes and pigments. Artists begin with the sketch of the painting and later natural colours are filled with brushes. Occasionally, they are enhanced by adding gems and crystals. Gold and silver leaf are also used to add a touch of opulence to the paintings. Shehzaad Ali Sherani, Dinesh Soni, Sushil Soni, and Jayesg Sharma are some of the notable artists dedicated to this exquisite art form.
