Artist K. Laxminarayan:

Kalamkari Colour Making workshop with S K. Laxminarayan, has over 25 years of experience in Karuppur Kalamkari. He has been certified by the Development Commissioner of Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles Govt. of India. He has participated in various exhibitions conducted by the central and state Governments of India. The master artist has been awarded numerous awards, including the State award, Kalanithi award from Dharmapuram Aadheenam, Kalai Chemmal Award from Thiruvaduthurai Aadheenam, International Excellence Award, and the Aram Award in 2023. He has also been awarded a Doctorate in Kalamkari. He has successfully trained over 1000 students in more than ten training programs.

About the artform - Karuppur Kalamkari was officially certified by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2021 and has a Geographical Indication tag. This ancient art form involves hand painting on cotton fabrics using vegetable dyes, which make it unique.

Steps we will follow in this workshop:

In this 1.5 hour in-person workshop, we will be learning how to make traditional and authentic colours for Kalamkari using natural materials, such as Myrobalan, Turmeric, iron water and jaggery. All materials for the workshop will be provided by us.
