About the Artwork +

Mahamaya Sikdar's traditional Kantha artwork on tussar silk canvas is a vibrant tapestry that intricately intertwines elements of nature and daily life. Inspired by the rich biodiversity and cultural heritage of Bengal, Sikdar's embroidery features a myriad of motifs including human, birds, animals, flowers, and geometric patterns. Each motif reflects her deep connection with her surroundings, portraying the beauty of Bengal's landscapes, the diversity of its wildlife, and the rhythms of rural life. This handcrafted Kantha piece celebrates the harmonious relationship between humans and nature, showcasing the intricate tapestry of life that surrounds us. Sikdar's meticulous details reveal her exceptional craftsmanship and artistic vision. Using skillful Kantha stitching techniques, she brings each motif to life, capturing their essence with precision. Rooted in tradition, her process involves time-honored methods passed down through generations. Beginning with a tussar silk canvas, she carefully selects vibrant threads to create intricate patterns and designs. Each stitch in this ethnic Kantha textile is executed with care, resulting in a visually captivating masterpiece. Sikdar's unique interpretation of Kantha embroidery blends vintage Kantha designs with contemporary patterns, preserving its cultural significance while infusing it with modern flair. Her work offers a fresh perspective on artisanal Kantha crafts, ensuring this cultural heritage continues for generations to come.
