About the Artwork +
This beautiful Gond painting by the artist Gareeba Singh Tekam portrays the head of a striking tiger with exquisite attention to detail. Its piercing eyes convey both strength and grace. The use of white against pale yellow, grey, and blue color symbolizes the tiger's calm presence and significance in Indian culture, where they are often revered as symbols of strength, courage, and protection. This Gond artwork celebrates the magnificence of these endangered big cats and their place in the natural world. The simplicity of the background serves as a powerful canvas for the tiger's portrayal, making this piece a visual ode to the beauty and significance of these creatures in the wild.
Gond art is a traditional form of painting practiced by the Gond tribal communities of central India, mainly in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. It is known for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and depictions of nature, animals, and tribal life. From peacocks and elephants to ants, each creation tells a story and reflects the Gond people's close relationship with their environment. Artists use fine lines and dots to create elaborate designs, often incorporating elements of folklore, mythology, and spirituality. According to Gond mythology, the art of painting originated from the Gondi deity, Devi Maoli. The Gond people believe that Devi Maoli taught the first Gond artist the secrets of painting in a dream. Since then, Gond art has been considered a sacred form of expression. The Gond people believe that good images bring good luck, so they decorate their homes with traditional motifs. Gond art has gained international recognition for its unique aesthetic appeal and cultural significance. Each artist has a distinctive style, blending myth and reality, organic and inorganic forms.
