About the Artwork +
This Chhau mask, crafted by Dharmendra Sutradhar, beautifully represents Lord Shiva, the revered Hindu deity known as the destroyer and transformer. The mask captures Shiva's serene and mystical essence, featuring his iconic third eye on the forehead, symbolizing his ability to see beyond the physical world and into deeper spiritual realms. The prominent crescent moon, resting on his matted locks, signifies his control over time, particularly over the waxing and waning phases of the moon. The flowing blue hair represents the Ganges river, which, according to mythology, flows through Shiva's locks, indicating his role as a life-giving force. Intricately detailed, the snake coiled around his neck highlights his dominance over fear and death. The precise brushstrokes on the mask emphasize the contours of his divine face, especially his calm yet powerful expression, with half-closed eyes exuding peace and tranquility. The minimalistic yet profound use of color, particularly the soft white complexion with contrasting accents of blue, yellow, and pink, enhances the deity’s celestial presence. His earrings and forehead markings (the "trishul" and "damru" symbols) further add to the divine aura, signifying destruction and creation, central to Shiva's identity. The mask exemplifies not only the artistic finesse of the Sutradhar family but also the spiritual vibrance of Chhau masks, deeply rooted in India's traditional dance-drama forms, where deities come alive through elaborate performances.
