About the Artwork +

Poet Keshav Das says about Jyeshtha -
“The sun is so bright and scorching that the five elements air, water, sky, earth and fire have become one, hot as fire..the roads are deserted and the tanks are parched dry… . even the powerful creatures become weak in this season.”
This Kangra miniature by artist Mukesh Kumar Depicts Radha and Krishna in the Jyestha season from the Barahmasa series. The protagonists stand together, in affectionate conversation, against an arid landscape, with cracked earth and sparse vegetation. The few trees and plants depicted appear wilted and thirsty, their leaves drooping under the relentless sun. It also offers a glimpse into the struggles of humans and animals seeking shelter to cope with the heat. Through intricate detailing and vibrant colors, the artist portrays a romantic visual narrative against the challenges of early summer.

Altogether, the concept of Baramasa in Pahari miniature painting celebrates the cyclical beauty of nature and the intertwined emotions of human life, offering a rich and immersive portrayal of the seasons through the lens of traditional Indian art. Centered on a nayika (woman) yearning for her lover's presence, it captures the changing seasons as they unfold in the background.

Kangra Art

Amid the natural beauty of the Kangra valley, Pahari painting developed into an art of great charm and delicacy under the influence of its own early traditions as well as refined Guler and Mughal styles. In the late 18th Kangra became the most powerful hill state, under Raja Sansar Chand the Kangra art flourished. The most significant topic in contemporary paintings is still love—historical and mythical love stories are brilliantly depicted in paintings like Radha Krishna. The paintings are extremely detailed, revealing not just the main figures but also surroundings filled with carefully painted trees, flowers, and other kinds of life. They truly are poetry in their core.
