About the Artwork +
Poet Keshav Das says about Shravan
“During this season the rivers meet the ocean making a pleasant scene. The creepers have clung to the trees. The lightning meets the clouds, all lovers are meeting their beloveds”
This Kangra miniature by artist Mukesh Kumar illustrates a couple in the Shravan season from the Barahmasa series. The protagonists, often identified as Radha and Krishna, are seated together, sharing a moment of intimate companionship. Their presence exudes warmth and affection, capturing the romantic essence of the season. Overhead, the sky is filled with grey, dark clouds and striking thunder, heavy with the promise of rain. Birds, depicted in fluid lines, appear to dance against the backdrop of the dark clouds, accompanied by peacocks and other birds within the lush green landscape. With its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and harmonious composition, the painting beautifully conveys the natural splendor of the Sawan season and emphasizes its romantic and rejuvenating spirit.
Altogether, the concept of Baramasa in Pahari miniature painting celebrates the cyclical beauty of nature and the intertwined emotions of human life, offering a rich and immersive portrayal of the seasons through the lens of traditional Indian art. Centered on a nayika (woman) yearning for her lover's presence, it captures the changing seasons as they unfold in the background.
