About the Artwork +
Sharad Purnima, the Ashwin Shukla full moon (October–November), is a major festival for the Vallabha community. Shrinathji, depicted before a silver brocade pithika (backdrop), is adorned in elaborately embroidered garments and numerous jewels, including a long necklace of precious and semi-precious stones, armbands, bracelets, rings, anklets, and toe rings. Four gopis, their hands and feet adorned with henna, are depicted with aquiline noses, lotus-bud eyes, arched eyebrows, and hands raised in dance with their beloved. A lush plantain grove of mango and banana trees, verdant from the monsoon rains, is laden with ripe mangoes. Lord Vishnu with Lakshmi, Brahma with Sarasvati, Shiva with Parvati, and Narad Muni are present to witness this divine leela.
The Pichwai comprises 26 side panels; the two base panels illustrate Goswami's education on Shri Krishna's numerous leelas, while the remaining 24 panels depict 24 of Shri Krishna's leelas (events) or utsavs (festivals), each portrayed through the goswamis' actions. The Pichwai's depiction of Shri Krishna's worship is evident in his raised left hand, symbolizing the Govardhan Leela. Below him are the essential elements of his worship: a paan beeda (betel leaf offering box), prasad dabbi (food offering box), and jal patra (water utensil). Two leelas from Shri Krishna's life are depicted in the foreground. The left panel shows Shri Krishna's worship during Annakoot, featuring 56 bhoj (food offerings), while the right panel illustrates his famous leela of breaking the gopis' matkis (earthen pots) filled with milk. The Sharad Purnima Pichwai precedes the Raasleela and is displayed several days before the actual Sharad Purnima, when the Raasleela pichwai is exhibited.
