About

Tara Ashok Hulamani, a master of the intricate Kasuti embroidery, has dedicated three decades to perfecting her craft. Hailing from Hubli, Karnataka, she learned the art form from Suruchi Mulay in her hometown. Despite passing on her knowledge to her daughter, Tara Ji remains the sole practitioner in her family, showcasing her commitment and passion for Kasuti.

Her expertise has earned her national recognition, with a prestigious National Award in Kasuti under her belt. Tara Ji's artistic journey has taken her across India, participating in festivals in major cities like Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Delhi. She has also represented her craft internationally, with visits to South Africa, Germany, and Singapore for workshops and exhibitions.

Tara Ji's creativity knows no bounds as she continuously explores new designs and themes, drawing inspiration from nature. While Kasuti designs typically follow a traditional pattern, Tara Ji's innovation shines through in her unique color combinations and placement.

Despite facing challenges in preserving and promoting this traditional art form, Tara Ji remains undeterred, viewing each obstacle as a new opportunity. She emphasizes the importance of fostering interest and creativity among artisans and the younger generation to ensure the continuity and development of Kasuti embroidery.

Her goals are simple yet profound – to continue honing her craft, adding creativity, and contributing to its legacy. Tara Ji aspires to collaborate with clothing brands and fashion groups to expand the reach and appreciation of Kasuti embroidery, showcasing her dedication to preserving this rich cultural heritage.
