About the Artwork +
This beautiful Kalamkari painting by Mannasamudram Viswanath Reddy portrays Lord Krishna and Radha. Originating in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, the traditional Indian textile art form, involving hand-painting or block-printing on fabric using natural dyes. Their name, derived from "kalam" (pen) and "kari" (work), Kalamkari paintings often depict scenes from Hindu mythology and feature intricate designs with natural dyes.
At the heart of the composition, Radha and Krishna are seen standing beside a cow. According to Hindu mythology, Krishna is a cowherd, and is hence associated with cows, believed to be their protector. He stands in a graceful pose, playing his flute, adorned with beautiful golden robes with blue and white details, standing out against his dark complexion, wearing ornaments fit for a prince, with a white tilak on his forehead, symbolising purity and spiritual protection. Radha, standing beside him under the lush canopy of the tree above, is depicted in green, a color associated with the sringar rasa, or the emotion of love and romance, an indication of her feelings towards Krishna. She wears elegant robes and ornaments, an epitome of beauty and grace.
Enclosed within two borders with floral and geometric motifs, set against a black backdrop with blue, yellow and green floral motifs, the artist shows a red circle in the middle, in which he portrays Radha and Krishna.
This piece is a testament to the Kalamkari tradition of storytelling and artistic legacy. It is not just a visual delight, but a symbol of divine love that transcends all worldly boundaries - of time, space, reality. It is an invocation to Radha and Krishna, to bless the viewer with that love and wisdom, reflecting the celebration of love to any space.
