About the Artwork +
The focal point of this Madhubani painting by Ambika Devi is the Tree of Life encircled by birds, fishes and other animals portraying the interconnectedness and depends on all life forms on each other. The monochrome as well as the tree of life depicts the unity and oneness of all creatures, creating an equal and harmonious world for all creatures living in it. Drawn inside circles, which represent the eternal cycles of birth, death and rebirth, this painting also depicts the confluence of various life forces and the continuous ebb and flow of one energy from one life form to another. Full of life, this painting converges the symbolisms attached to various natural creatures. While the fish symbolize fertility, abundance and prosperity, the birds signify freedom, prosperity, divinity, harmony, and the balance of nature. The tree of life also portrays resilience, stability, and growth in the face of challenges. The tree of life is often painted during births and marriages primarily by women artists in Mithila as the tree of life is abundant in fertility, life energy and goof fortune. This monochromatic painting in black ink also pays homage to the traditional Madhubani art done in ancient times in Monochrome where artists mixed sooth with binding pigments to create bold black strokes on white paper.
