About the Artwork +
This intricate Madhubani artwork by Ambika Devi, bursting with vibrant colours and complex geometrical figures, symbolizes the harmony and balance found among different elements of nature as the fishes are swimming in circles arranged in the pattern of a flower. Fishes swim in water which symbolizes the flow of life and transformation as well as the circles in which the fish are swimming also depict the endless cycle of life of birth, growth, death and rebirth and the continuous transformations that the soul keeps going through eternally. The fishes in the circular arrangements finally forming floral patterns aims for a holistic painting depicting completeness, spiritual wholeness, question of inner wisdom and the seeking of higher knowledge. These repetitive geometric patterns create a continuous rhythm, balance, and harmony in the painting. While fishes and flowers symbolize prosperity and abundance the circles represent eternal continuity, so the depiction of all three elements together portrays the continuous cycle of abundance, fertility, and balance in nature and for human beings. The elements also represent the ups and downs in life that every human being has to face before he/she dies. Filled with intricate geometric patterns and vibrant hues sources from natural plant products like rice powder, sandalwood, indigo and flowers, none notices the absence of empty white spaces in the painting as this painting is a celebration of life and the use of bring, vibrant colours in Madhubani art is symbolic to a vibrant life full of life energies, just like the fishes that embody abundance of fertility.
