About the Artwork +

This spectacular 3D wood inlay panel by Mohan Kumar depicts the profound Gita Updesha, culminating in the Vishwaroop Darshan, the moment during the Kurukshetra War when Lord Krishna reveals his supreme, universal form - the Vishwaroop, to Arjuna. The composition is masterfully divided, featuring the iconic chariot in the foreground while the divine, multi-armed Vishwaroop form of Krishna manifests in the center, radiating celestial light.

The chariot itself is a triumph of the Mysore Rosewood Inlay tradition, carved in high relief with incredible architectural detail, including a majestic lion at its base and intricate peacock and floral motifs adorning its tiered pillars. At the summit of the ratha sits a celestial Garuda, while Hanuman stands beneath a saffron flag marked with Om. The entire scene is framed by an ornate archway decorated with sacred cows, lotus blooms, and complex vine patterns with a Kirtimukha at the center, elevating the entire panel into a sophisticated sculptural shrine and celebrating the intricate symbolism of Indian temple architecture alongside the epic narrative of the Mahabharata.

The artisan utilizes the natural colors and grains of diverse timbers, further enhanced with vibrant traditional pigments to highlight the divine gold of the chariot and the white of the four galloping horses. Arjuna is shown in a posture of total surrender, with his hands folded in prayer as he gazes up at the cosmic manifestation. In the background, a vast procession of smaller chariots and warriors recedes into the distance, emphasizing the epic scale of the Mahabharata battlefield. By layering the wood of varying thicknesses, Mohan Kumar creates a physical depth that allows the divine figures and the architectural elements to literally step out from the dark rosewood sky, transforming this wooden panel into a living, three-dimensional window into one of Indian scripture's most powerful spiritual moments.
