About the Artwork +
Witness the captivating blend of academic realism and Indian mythology in the creations of Raja Ravi Varma, regarded as the Father of Modern Indian Art. Presenting a beautiful oleograph by Raja Ravi Varma, showcasing Goddess Lakshmi, the revered Hindu deity of wealth, prosperity, and fortune, standing gracefully upon a blooming lotus. In his quest to make art accessible to a broader audience, Raja Ravi Varma pioneered the use of oleographs, produced through the lithographic press, a pivotal innovation that popularized and democratized Indian art. The oleograph features the goddess wearing an elegant pink saree with intricate gold detailing, adorned with traditional jewelry, and a golden crown encrusted with precious gems. She holds lotus flowers in both hands, symbolizing purity and divine beauty, while her other hands are positioned in gestures of blessing (varada mudra) and assurance (abhaya mudra). Her serene expression exudes grace, divinity, and benevolence. The background features a lush green landscape with a flowing river, trees, and a waterfall, emphasizing the goddess’s association with abundance and nature’s bounty. An elephant is seen in the water, possibly symbolizing wisdom and royal splendor, reinforcing her status as a divine figure and her association with the form of Gajalakshmi. The oleograph retains its vibrant colors and intricate details, showcasing Raja Ravi Varma’s signature artistic style that revolutionized Indian religious art in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This exquisite piece is not just an artistic masterpiece but also a deeply revered testament of spiritual and cultural significance, evoking a sense of devotion and reverence among its admirers as well as art lovers.
