About the Artwork +
This exquisite Tanjore painting, a prime example of the rich artistic tradition of South India, features Goddess Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune, seated regally on a lotus. The artwork is characterized by the hallmark Tanjore style, with its sumptuous use of gold leaf, vibrant colors, and embedded semi-precious stones, creating a radiant and deeply auspicious presence.
Goddess Lakshmi is depicted centrally, her form rendered in a warm, inviting complexion, richly adorned with intricate gold jewelry, necklaces and a majestic crown. Her sari drapes gracefully in shades of red and green, embellished with detailed patterns. She holds blooming pink lotus flowers in her upper two hands, symbolizing purity and spiritual growth, while her lower hands are positioned in gestures of protection, blessing and granting boons (Abhaya and Varada Mudra). She is flanked by Lord Ganesha on her right and Goddess Saraswati on her left.
Lord Ganesha, depicted with his characteristic elephant head, is rendered in a golden-yellow hue and holds his attributes - a lotus, scribe, modak and one hand in the abhaya mudra, with his vahana - mooshaka by his feet, while Goddess Saraswati, in white and gold, plays her veena and holds a book, embodying her role as the Goddess of knowledge and music. At the very bottom, a small figure sits, who is embodied by the God of Wealth and the Guardian of Treasures, Lord Kuber, flanked by heaps of golden coins and pots overflowing with wealth, symbolizing abundance.
The main figure of Lakshmi is set within a grand, arched shrine (mandapam), meticulously crafted with intricate gold leaf work that gives it a raised, tactile quality. This structure is further embellished with numerous colorful semi-precious stones in red, green and white. The background behind the deities is a deep black, allowing the gold and vibrant colors to stand out with striking brilliance.
The base of the painting features a vibrant orange-red and the entire composition is bordered by an ornate frame of repeating patterns in gold and red, reminiscent of temple architecture. This painting, with its dazzling luminosity and meticulous detailing, offers a profound darshan of Goddess Lakshmi and her divine retinue, embodying blessings of prosperity, wisdom and auspiciousness, all masterfully brought to life through the distinctive Tanjore technique.
