About the Artwork +
In this extraordinary Gomira mask, master artisan Kalyan Chandra Sarkar has transformed the traditional ritual woodcraft of Kushmandi into a vertical epic, using a single piece of wood to chronicle the Mahabharata. While Gomira masks are traditionally rooted in the agrarian and animistic rituals of North Bengal, this specific creation functions as a narrative pillar, where sacred iconography and legendary storytelling converge. At the base of the sculpture lies a serene, meditative face characterized by heavy-lidded eyes and a prominent mustache, providing a grounded foundation for the complex, four-tiered spire that rises above it.
The crowning tier of this masterful Gomira mask depicts the awe-inspiring moment of Vishwaroop Darshan, where Lord Krishna reveals his Virat Roop (universal form) to a humbled Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra. Kalyan Chandra Sarkar utilizes the vertical peak of the spire to capture this celestial revelation, carving a central figure that radiates divine authority, often characterized by multiple heads or symbolic attributes to represent the infinite nature of the cosmos. Arjuna is typically shown in a posture of total surrender or profound realization, his smaller scale emphasizing the overwhelming majesty of the vision before him. By placing this supreme manifestation at the very top of the sculpture, the artisan effectively completes the spiritual arc of the mask, moving from the earthly face at the base through the tragic trials of the Mahabharata to the final, absolute truth of the divine.
The second level is dedicated to the Draupadi Vastraharan, depicting the pivotal moral crisis in the royal court of Hastinapur. Through delicate open-work carving, the artisan captures the tension of the scene, where the figures are positioned in a rhythmic struggle that eventually sparked the great war. The use of negative space within the tier allows the figures to appear suspended, emphasizing the gravity of the divine intervention and the failure of the courtly elders.
The third level of the mask intricately depicts the Dyuta Krida or the fateful dice game, which serves as the ultimate catalyst for the events of the Mahabharata. Within this tier, Kalyan Chandra Sarkar captures the intense psychological and moral tension of the royal assembly, carving the figures of the Pandavas and Kauravas as they huddle around the game board. The artisan uses the confined space of the wooden tier to emphasize the high stakes and the deceptive atmosphere of the court, where the rolling of the dice signifies the loss of a kingdom and the onset of exile. By placing this scene of betrayal and strategic collapse alongside the themes of divine revelation and sacrifice, the mask becomes a comprehensive visual study of the human and cosmic forces that shape the destiny of the epic.
Lower in the spire, the artisan portrays the poignant scene of Bhishma Pitamaha on the bed of arrows (Sharajayya). The horizontally carved lines represent the countless arrows shot by Arjuna, supporting the fallen patriarch as he awaits the auspicious moment of his passing. This tier showcases the artisan's technical mastery, as he translates the vast, emotional landscape of the Kurukshetra battlefield into the compact, rigid medium of Gamar wood. The figures throughout the levels are rendered with fluid, rounded limbs, mirroring the dynamic movements seen in traditional Gomira mask dances.
By integrating these specific episodes of Dharma and sacrifice, Kalyan Chandra Sarkar elevates the Gomira mask from a functional dance accessory to a sophisticated piece of fine sculpture. The cross-hatched bands separating each tier add a geometric rhythm to the piece, reminiscent of regional bamboo weaving, while the hollowed-out background highlights the intricate detail of the characters. This work stands as a testament to the living heritage of the Rajbanshi community, proving that ancient traditions can evolve to house the timeless narratives of Indian philosophy and epic literature.
