About the Artwork +
This striking leather puppet crafted by Rajeev Pulavar represents Malyamanam, the wise yet scheming uncle of Ravana from the epic Ramayana. Malyamanam’s character is typically depicted as a cunning elder with a deep understanding of politics and warfare, and Pulavar brings this to life through intricate detailing and craftsmanship. The puppet’s rotund, imposing figure is dressed in a striped green and red garment, adorned with tiny white dots, each carefully perforated to create a mesmerizing pattern when illuminated. His face, with a long nose and sharp features, suggests an air of both wisdom and deceit, perfectly capturing Malyamanam's role as an advisor to Ravana, often guiding him with manipulative strategies.
The puppet's hand holds a staff, symbolizing his authority and role as an elder statesman in Ravana’s court, while his body posture reflects both contemplation and command. The use of dark, earthen colors for his skin contrasts beautifully with the vibrantly dotted attire, which reflects the artistic nuances of Kerala’s *Tholpavakoothu* tradition. The puppet’s large, rounded body is balanced with delicate, movable arms, emphasizing its lifelike motion during performances. His headgear, studded with additional dotted patterns, adds a touch of regal dignity to his otherwise scheming persona. Rajeev Pulavar’s craftsmanship breathes life into Malyamanam, not only preserving the character’s historical and cultural significance but also showcasing the intricate beauty of shadow puppetry that continues to captivate audiences through timeless mythological narratives.
