About the Artwork +

This beautiful Antique Tanjore captures a tender, intimate moment between Radha and Krishna, framed within a regal architectural setting. Tanjore (Thanjavur) Painting is a classical South Indian art form known for its elaborate composition, vibrant colors, iconic relief work and extensive use of gold leaf and semi-precious stones, primarily depicting Hindu deities.

Standing atop a low, gilded pedestal with a red cushion, the divine pair is depicted in a charming embrace, with their arms wrapped around one another to symbolize their eternal unity. Krishna is rendered in his traditional deep blue hue, standing in a relaxed pose with his legs crossed, holding his flute in his left hand. Radha, with a warm and fair complexion, stands closely by his side. A distinctive feature of this composition is the vibrant green parrot perched delicately on Radha’s right shoulder, a symbol of messenger-like love and nature's witness to their devotion.

The figures are dressed in rich, traditional garments that get highlighted against the dark background. Krishna wears a dhoti in shades of yellow and green, with a thick garland of pink flowers draped across his chest. Radha is draped in an elegant saree of deep orange and red, the folds of the fabric highlighted with delicate gold linework. Both figures wear tiered, heavy necklaces, thick armlets and anklets, broad bangles, waistbelts and intricate head-jewellery, all shimmering with gold leaf and studded with signature red and green stones.

The scene is set beneath a grand, embossed gold arch, further embellished by heavy, draped curtains. These curtains are gathered at the top, creating a shrine-like atmosphere that elevates the setting to appear as a divine palace. The entire painting is encased in a robust, dark-stained wooden frame, which provides a somber, grounded border that intensifies the luminous gold and vibrant colors of the sacred figures within.

More Tanjore Paintings

Tanjore

Tanjore art, or Thanjavur painting, is a classical South Indian art form originating in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, known for its vibrant portrayal of Hindu deities using rich colors, gold foil, and a distinct three-dimensional effect. Flourishing under Nayak and Maratha patronage from the 16th century, these paintings embody spiritual depth and cultural heritage, often serving as devotional icons. Key characteristics include robust composition, intricate detailing, and the use of relief work with limestone paste to create raised areas for gold leaf application, adding luminosity and longevity. The art form's significance lies in its aesthetic beauty, religious expression, and historical value, with ongoing efforts to preserve its unique techniques and traditions.
