About the Artwork +
This antique Tanjore painting is a magnificent depiction of the Ram Darbar, capturing the royal and divine assembly of Ayodhya in a traditional jewel-like finish.
Tanjore (Thanjavur) Painting is a classical South Indian art form known for its elaborate composition, vibrant colors, iconic relief work and extensive use of gold leaf and semi-precious stones set in a wooden frame, primarily depicting Hindu deities.
Executed in the traditional Tanjore style, the work is set against a deep, luminous prussian blue background that heightens the brilliance of the gold ornamentation and the jewel-like colors of the figures. At the heart of the composition, Ram and Sita are seated upon the royal throne with a magnificent golden chhatra (royal umbrella) above.
Lord Ram is depicted with a serene green complexion. He wears a garland around his neck and holds his mighty dhanushya (bow) in his left hand. Seated to his left, Sita is dressed in a regal red sari, providing a vibrant contrast to the gold and green tones of the piece. Both deities have their right hands raised in the abhaya mudra, the gesture of fearlessness and protection.
The couple is flanked and served by their most devoted companions. Bharat and Shatrughna: Standing attentively beside the throne, the two brothers hold chowries (fly whisks) in service and carry their own dhanushyas. Seated at the base of the throne are Lakshman and Hanuman. Lakshman has set aside his bow, his hands joined together in pranam (a gesture of prayer). Hanuman kneels in his classic posture of humble devotion at the couple's feet.
The entire assembly is framed by a grand three-arched prabhavati (ornate archway). This structure is heavily embossed with gold leaf and studded with traditional red and green stones. In the foreground, a plate of coconuts and bananas sits alongside a traditional pot, representing the naivedya (sacred food offerings) grounded in daily temple ritual.
The antique nature of this piece is evident in the mellowed tone of the gold and the fine, hand-painted details of the garments and facial expressions. The extensive use of gold foil on the crowns, jewelry and architectural drapes gives the artwork a luminous, opulent finish, making it a quintessential devotional centerpiece.
