About the Artwork +
This Srikalahasti Kalamkari textile by Ghanshyam Sarode is a monumental and innovative portrayal of the divine, featuring a massive, reclining figure of Lord Ganesha that serves as a cosmic vessel for numerous other sacred manifestations. Hand-painted using a traditional bamboo kalam and natural dyes, this horizontal composition reimagines the deity not just as a singular figure, but as an all-encompassing universe.
The focus is the colossal, reclining body of Ganesha, whose form stretches across the length of the canvas. In one of his large hands, he delicately holds a lotus blossom, a symbol of purity and spiritual awakening. The true complexity of the work lies within the contours of Ganesha’s own body and the space immediately surrounding him, which are populated by a multitude of smaller, intricate scenes:
Within the deity's form, one section portrays Ganesha in the spirit of the Matsya Avatar of Vishnu, with his classic attributes of shankha (conch), gada (mace), padma (lotus) and chakra ( discus), where the upper body of Ganesha emerges gracefully from the mouth of a giant fish. Several smaller Ganesha figures are shown seated upon lotuses or standing, floating amidst a vibrant aquatic ecosystem filled with rhythmic, swirling fishes, symbolizing life within the cosmic waters. Another image depicts Ganesha in the company of Lord Shiva, emphasizing his familial and spiritual connection within the Hindu pantheon.
The background is a masterful display of the Srikalahasti style, filled with dense, swirling floral vines and microscopic geometric patterns that ensure no space is left empty. The work is dominated by rich madder reds that provide a warm, energetic base. This is balanced by cooling indigo blues used for the water and fish motifs, and earthy ochres that define the divine figures. The entire scene is framed by a bold, deep-red border containing floral scrollwork, which acts as a grounding element for the busy, ethereal narrative within.
Through this work, Ghanshyam Sarode explores the concept of the Vishwarupa, the universal form, suggesting that all aspects of creation and divinity are contained within the auspicious presence of Ganesha.
