About the Artwork +
This complex Madhubani painting by Pratima Bharti depicts the divine family of Kailasa, featuring Shiva, his consort Parvati and their sons, Kartikeya and Ganesha. Madhubani art is a vibrant folk painting tradition from the Mithila region of India, renowned for its intricate geometric patterns, bold colors and symbolic depictions of mythology and nature. The family is arranged in a compact, intimate group, with each figure identifiable by their traditional attributes and symbolic iconography.
Lord Shiva is depicted with his signature third eye and a crescent moon in his matted hair. He holds a large Trishul (trident), which represents the three qualities (gunas) of creation, maintenance and destruction in one hand, while the other is stretched towards Parvati. A serpent is coiled around his neck, and the river Ganga is shown flowing from his locks. Seated beside him, Goddess Parvati is adorned as a bride or queen with a red patterned veil and intricate jewelry. Her presence represents Shakti (energy) and the nurturing aspect of the divine mother. One hand is raised in the abhaya mudra (blessing) and the other is circled around Ganesha
Kartikeya, the elder son and commander of the divine army is shown in front of Shiva. He is identifiable by his youthful appearance and his association with strength. Here, he is depicted in a seated posture with decorative garments and holding an elephant goad (ankusha). Lord Ganesha, the younger son is nestled near Parvati, identifiable by his elephant head and trunk. He is shown in a playful form, symbolizing wisdom and the beginning of all auspicious tasks.
The garments of the figures are particularly intricate. Shiva’s tiger-skin wrap is rendered with bold dots and stripes, while Parvati’s attire uses a mix of solid red and fine-line borders. Both children wear striped dhotis that add a rhythmic pattern to the lower half of the piece. In the lower center, small vessels and a bowl of sweets (laddoos) are placed, symbolizing the ritual of bhog (offerings) made to the family during worship.
The painting features a complex interplay of Bharni and Kachni styles, filling every inch of the frame with meaning. The backdrop is a pale gold color filled with dense, swirling Kachni line-work that creates a sense of vibrating divine atmosphere. Stylized pink and orange flowers are scattered throughout the background to represent the celestial garden.
The artwork is contained within a highly decorative architectural border. Vertical bands on either side feature leaf-and-vine motifs, acting like the pillars of a temple sanctum. A row of circular motifs and alternating leaf patterns runs along the top and bottom, creating a horizontal balance. The entire scene is enclosed in a solid black frame, which anchors attention on the sacred family portrait.
