About the Artwork +

Originating in Rajasthan, Phad painting is a captivating folk scroll art form that serves as a canvas for storytelling. For generations, the Joshi family of artists has been the torchbearer of this tradition, meticulously painting vibrant narratives that bring to life the epic tales of folk heroes like Pabuji and Dev Narayan. This magnificent Phad painting by Kalyan Joshi showcases a captivating scene of Lord Krishna and Radha, rendered in a riot of colors and intricate details.

The central figures are Krishna, depicted with his characteristic blue body and a flute in hand, and Radha, seated together on a large, beautiful lotus flower under a lush, green tree. Lord Krishna is shown in his regal form, adorned with a golden crown, peacock feather and jewelry, while Radha is depicted in a rich green, red and blue sari with intricate patterns. The couple is shown in a moment of serene intimacy, their gestures and expressions conveying a profound love story.

The entire composition is framed by a bold red and yellow border, a hallmark of Phad art that directs the eye and contains the narrative. This piece exemplifies the rich storytelling tradition of Phad art, where each element and detail holds symbolic meaning, celebrating folklore and cultural heritage. Kalyan Joshi's work is a testament to the enduring beauty and cultural significance of Phad art, capturing the imagination with its detailed and profound imagery.
