About the Artwork +
Originating in 19th-century Kolkata near the Kalighat Kali Temple, Kalighat painting is recognized for its bold outlines, vibrant colors, and swift brushwork. Initially depicting Hindu deities, its thematic scope broadened to encompass everyday life, social issues, and satirical commentary on contemporary society.
Bhaskar Chitrakar's nine-panel Kalighat painting skillfully blends traditional stylistic elements with observations of modern life and social interactions. The panels present a diverse array of scenes, ranging from a woman capturing a selfie with a mobile phone to depictions of traditional figures, including men seemingly attending to their wives. The artist subtly portrays independent women while also offering a commentary on shifting societal roles, where men might appear to occupy less dominant positions, alongside the inclusion of urban elements such as auto-rickshaws and taxis. Through the use of bold lines, vibrant colors, plain background and dynamic compositions, Chitrakar illustrates the enduring adaptability of Kalighat art in capturing both traditional narratives and contemporary moments. The artwork showcases the tradition's historical role in storytelling and its continued relevance in reflecting the evolving cultural landscape.
In this nine-panel work, Bhaskar Chitrakar honors the essence of Kalighat art while infusing it with modern perspectives. By depicting both traditional and modern subjects with the characteristic energy and style of Kalighat, Chitrakar ensures the lively spirit of this unique art form continues to resonate with contemporary audiences.
The paintings have 0.5" dark brown frame (wooden if possible).
