About the Artwork +
For Nagaland's 16 northeastern tribes, the ancient and fundamental loin loom is deeply culturally significant. This "back strap loom," a simple yet ingenious device anchored by bamboo and the weaver's body, produces textiles rich in symbolic motifs representing personal achievements, wealth, historical feasts, and past activities like raids. This striking contemporary wall hanging by Nagaloom is a vibrant expression of Naga textile heritage, meticulously woven on a loin loom in Dimapur, Nagaland, using the traditional backstrap technique. Crafted by skilled Naga weavers, this piece exemplifies the bold aesthetics and intricate patterns synonymous with the region’s rich cultural legacy. the hanging features a brilliant cream base interlaced with powerful geometric motifs in black and crimson red—signature colors in many Naga tribal textiles that signify strength, unity, and identity. The upper and lower sections of the piece are adorned with a series of dynamic “X” shaped designs, while the central field displays alternating bands of tightly woven zigzags and arrow-like forms, creating a rhythmic visual flow. These motifs, passed down through generations, carry deep symbolic meaning and are executed with impeccable precision using the backstrap loom, a unique weaving apparatus that is tensioned by the weaver’s body, allowing complete control over the pattern and structure. The wall hanging is suspended from a wooden rod with a braided red, white, and black hanging thread, echoing the color story of the textile and adding a playful, handcrafted touch. More than just a decorative item, this textile is a testament to the living tradition of Naga weaving—preserved, celebrated, and reimagined through Antaran’s initiative to empower artisan communities. It effortlessly blends heritage with contemporary design, making it an ideal addition to modern, rustic, or eclectic interiors while telling a deeper story of cultural pride and artisanal excellence.
