About the Artwork +
Cheriyal Scroll painting, a vibrant art form from Telangana, India, is a visual storytelling tradition. Typically painted on long scrolls, it captivates with bright colours and dynamic figures that narrate Hindu epics, local folklore, and even contemporary social issues, all rendered in a distinctive style. This captivating Cheriyal Scroll painting by master artist Sai Kiran vividly encapsulates a joyful village harvest scene with an emphasis on the mango season—celebrating the rhythms of rural life through vibrant colors and traditional storytelling. Dominating the upper half, a man sits atop a bullock cart, skillfully guiding the sturdy pair of white bulls through the earthy village path, his relaxed posture and attire reflecting a day of fruitful labor. In the foreground, a woman elegantly balances a basket filled with golden-yellow mangoes on her head, her expression content and purposeful as she makes her way back home, embodying grace and strength. Just behind her, another woman is bent down near the lush greenery, attentively gathering scattered mangoes from the ground, showcasing the communal effort and harmony of rural living. At the heart of the composition, under a stylized canopy of vibrant green leaves, a man pokes the mango tree with a stick, energetically plucking the ripe fruits and dropping them below, symbolizing the direct relationship between people and nature in village culture. Each figure is adorned in traditional attire with intricate jewelry, their expressive eyes and dynamic stances bringing the narrative to life. The painting's signature Cheriyal palette—rich reds, mustard yellows, bright greens, and inky outlines—is framed with a cheerful floral border, reinforcing the joyous theme. This piece beautifully preserves the essence of Telangana's cultural identity, capturing a timeless moment of collaboration, harvest, and celebration through the lens of folk artistry.
