About the Artwork +
This intricate Mata ni Pachedi, created by renowned artist Vasant Manubhai Chitara, beautifully showcases the traditional art form from Gujarat, India. At the heart of this masterpiece is Vishat Mata, a fierce twenty-armed goddess whose name is derived from the Gujarati words vis (twenty) and haat (arm), symbolizing her invincibility as a warrior. Seated atop her black buffalo, a gift from Lord Vishnu, Vishat Mata is depicted in her full divine glory, surrounded by concentric circles filled with motifs, deities, and symbolic elements. Her vahan, the buffalo, is a key distinguishing feature, not to be confused with Meladi Mata's black goat, whose horns are straighter and tail shorter.
The outer rings of the composition are adorned with intricate designs of animals, birds, and motifs like lotuses, all rendered in vivid natural dyes of deep reds, blues, yellows, and greens. The borders feature geometric patterns that frame the composition, lending balance and harmony. Vishat Mata holds special significance among the Vaghri tribe, as they believe she created their ancestor, a drummer-man, from the sweat of her breasts. This *Mata ni Pachedi* serves not only as a sacred cloth for worship but also as a visual narrative of Vishat Mata's power and a testament to Vasant Manubhai Chitara’s artistry and devotion to this traditional craft.
