About the Artwork +
Discover a world of harmony and balance in this exquisite Kantha created by Mahamaya Sikdar. Kantha embroidery, a cherished textile tradition from Bengal, is deeply rooted in history and mythology. Traditionally practiced by rural women, Kantha involves intricate hand-stitched designs on old sarees and dhotis, giving them new life through elaborate motifs. Mythologically, it is believed that Lord Buddha’s disciples wore patchwork robes resembling Kantha, and over centuries, this craft evolved into a rich artistic expression. More than just a beautiful piece, it's a story told in thread, where aquatic and terrestrial creatures mingle amidst vibrant floral designs. Kantha, a cherished Bengali textile tradition, weaves together history and mythology through intricate hand-stitched designs on repurposed sarees and dhotis. This artwork is a vibrant expression of Bengali heritage, framed by borders of intricate geometric designs. Elephants, revered symbols of wisdom and strength, parade along the edges, invoking the protection and prosperity of Lord Ganesha. Their varied hues of blue, yellow, and grey, some adorned with playful zig-zag patterns, add a contemporary touch to this ancient motif. The central panel honors Bengal's deep connection to its rivers with the sacred image of fish, symbolizing fertility and abundance. Interwoven with these emblems of prosperity are delicate birds, representing freedom and joy A central floral medallion completes the composition, radiating elegance and the enduring spirit of the artistic tradition. This exquisite Kantha embroidery tells a story of tradition and artistry in which Mahamaya Sikdar works effortlessly to blend the classical motifs of elephants, fish, and birds with a contemporary eye, creating a piece that's both timeless and modern. Her work not only celebrates Bengal’s artistic legacy but also empowers women artisans by sustaining this age-old craft. It is a celebration of the rich artistic legacy and the enduring power of handcrafted textiles.
